International adoption support in Minnesota

Minnesota parents may not always be able to find a child to adopt locally, and they may need to turn to an international adoption agency to find the child of their dreams. Some sources for adoptive children can be Africa, Southeast Asia, Russia or other countries. However, when adopting a child from overseas, there are some unique legal concerns that parents will need to navigate.

Fortunately, international legal standards now exist to help parents ensure that their international adoption is handled as easily as possible. These legal standards are a part of the Hague Convention on Adoptions. Many countries -- including the United States -- have ratified and approved the Hague Convention on Adoptions, making the adoption process relatively straightforward for new parents who adopt from these countries.

Parents who choose to adopt from other countries may need to additional legal and immigration law support. In these situations, Minnesota parents will require an attorney familiar with international adoption, immigration law and local Minnesota state laws on adoption in order to meet all of the unique requirements to make their adoptions a success.

One pleasant development that future adoptive parents can look forward to is a recent change to the law that allows for automatic United States citizenship being granted to internationally adopted children if the adoptive parents are United States citizens. That said, parents must still complete and file the necessary application to benefit from this new change to the law.

At Berg Debele Desmidt & Rabuse, we have handled all manner of international adoptions. Our legal team is familiar with the process of organizing the professionals required to appropriately navigate all of the legal hurdles involved with such an adoption.
